Prison Puppy Program in Arizona
About Lions Project for Canine Companions
Since 1983, the Lions Project for Canine Companions has worked to support individuals with disabilities by raising critical funds and awareness for the mission of Canine Companions. As a Lions Foundation-affiliated nonprofit organization, it remains committed to providing life-changing service dogs at no cost to those in need.
Advancing Independence Through Service Dogs
Canine Companions supplies highly trained service dogs to adults, children, and veterans with disabilities. These dogs not only offer practical assistance with daily tasks but also foster greater autonomy and emotional support for their handlers. With the steadfast backing of the Lions Project, this essential mission continues to grow in scope and impact.
Prison Puppy Raising Programs in Arizona
Among our initiatives, the Lions Project for Canine Companions proudly sponsors Puppy Raising Prison Programs at two federal facilities in Arizona: FCI Phoenix and FCI Tucson. These programs pair service dog puppies with incarcerated individuals who take on the responsibility of raising and training them during their early developmental stages.
The results are significant. Puppies raised in these structured environments tend to achieve higher success rates in becoming qualified service dogs than traditional homes.
Simultaneously, the programs offer inmates an opportunity to build empathy, responsibility, and a sense of purpose.
Program participation significantly reduces offender recidivism which contributes to broader societal benefits beyond the prison walls.
