Lions Project Helps Power Campus Upgrades with New Utility Vehicle
The Canine Companions North Central Training Center has a powerful new tool driving efficiency and impact across its 16.5-acre campus—a new Kawasaki Mule utility vehicle.
JP Otero-Meacham, Facilities Manager for the North Central Region, reached out to the Lions Project to help meet a growing need: better mobility and equipment transport across the expansive campus. Today, the Mule is delivering on that request in full force.
“It has helped me immensely in getting around campus efficiently, which translates into more projects being completed—not to mention the physical toll it saves on myself.” - JP Otero-Meacham
The Mule isn’t just saving time—it’s enhancing every corner of campus life. From hauling heavy tools and supplies, to removing yard waste with volunteer groups, to transporting paver stones weighing up to 60 pounds each, the Mule has proven essential. It’s also playing a key role in event support, particularly during large campus-wide gatherings like DogFest, where setup and cleanup demand high-volume material transport.
Looking ahead, the Mule’s use will expand even further. Thanks to additional Lions Club funding this year, a snowplow and salt spreader will be installed, making winter operations safer and more cost-effective.
“We plan to use the Mule for snow removal going forward, which will cut down on seasonal maintenance expenses,” JP noted.
This successful project is one more example of how Lions Clubs across the country are making tangible, lasting contributions to the Canine Companions mission. From supporting people to powering progress—this is what partnership looks like.
